Looking for something to do when visiting La Junta? La Junta is located in the peaceful Arkansas Valley, has a moderate climate and over 300 days of sunshine each year.

The Midtown Motel is conveniently located near many popular attractions, activities, and areas of interest.  There’s a lot to do in Southeastern Colorado. We would be happy to provide tips and advice regarding the various activities and attractions that are available.


Bent’s Old Fort
Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site features a reconstructed 1840’s adobe fur trading post on the mountain branch of the Santa Fe Trail where traders, trappers, travelers, and Plains Indian tribes came together in peaceful terms for trade. In the 1830’s, Bent’s Fort was on the border with Mexico.  The Midtown Motel is a 15-20 minute drive to Bent’s Old Fort.

Picket Wire Canyonlands
The Picketwire Canyonlands are primitive canyons and home to the largest known set of dinosaur tracks in North America with over 1400 prints in 100 separate tracks which scientists believe were left over 150 million years ago. You can also find Native American rock art, early Hispanic settlements and an historic ranch. There is a variety of wildlife inhabits the area, including deer, antelope, coyote, snakes, lizards and birds. The USDA Forest Service provides tours throughout the year and the area is great for hiking, biking and horseback riding.  The Picket Wire Canyonlands are located roughly 40 minutes drive from the Midtown Motel along the Purgatoire River.

Koshare Indian Museum
The museum is unusual in that it was built by a Boy Scout troop under the inspired leadership of our founder, James Francis “Buck” Burshears, and the original 1949 structure is a registered state historic site of the Colorado Historical Society, housing a collection of Native American art and artifacts considered to be among the finest in the world.  The Koshare Indian Museum has the largest self-supporting roof in the country with 600 logs and weighing almost 40 tons.  The Midtown Motel is a 3-4 minute drive from the Koshare Indian Museum

Otero Museum
The Otero Museum is listed on the National Registry of Historical sites and has many artifacts on display including antique and vintage cars, chuck wagons and stage coaches, fire engines, mementos of the Civil War and two World Wars as well as railroad and agricultural artifacts from the 1800’s.  The Midtown Motel is a 2 minute drive to the Otero Museum.

Boggsville Settlement
Boggsville is an old settlement founded in 1862 .on the Purgatoire River just south of Las Animas.  It was the last home of Kit Carson, and was a major site on the branch of the Santa Fe Trail during the 1860’s. The Boggsville Settlement is 45-50 minute drive from the Midtown.

Commanche National Grassland Headquarter
The Commanche National Grassland includes over 440,000 acres in Southeastern Colorado and offers superb opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding and camping.

Places of Interest

Sante Fe Trail
The Sante Fe Trail extends 1200 miles over five states and was the first major western trade route. It links Franklin, Missouri with Sante Fe, New Mexico.

Otero Junior College
Founded in 1941, Otero Junior College is located on an attractive 40-acre campus on the southern edge of La Junta. With an enrollment of approximately 1,600 students at the college, the student body consists of traditional as well as non-traditional students, international students, and students from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds. Over 97 percent of Otero Junior College students are employed upon graduation or go on to continue their education at 4-year colleges or universities.

Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center
Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center, or AVRMC, is a regional medical center with 115 beds that serves the larger Southeastern Colorado area.  AVRMC has specialty clinics, radiology, intensive care unit (ICU), OB/GYN, respiratory therapy and rehabilitation services.

Casa del Sol Retirement Community
Casa del Sol is an independent living retirement community located at the edge of La Junta. The facility provides a retirement lifestyle which offers independence and companionship in a beautiful setting, without the worries of maintaining a home. The  campus consists of six eight-plexes, five duplexes, an activities center, and a workshop. This facility is available to adults 55 years of age and older.

La Junta Airport
La Junta airport is 3 miles north of La Junta, in the La Junta Industrial Park, off state highway 109. While the facility is an uncontrolled service, it is the largest airport in southeastern Colorado, which includes two runways and 77 acres of tarmac. Numerous private and charter planes utilize the well-maintained facility year round with a maximum wheel load of 20,000 pounds. Aviation hours of operation are 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM , 7 days a week from May 1st through August 31st.

Koshare Indian Dancers
The Koshare Indian Dancers are the members of Boy Scout Troop 232 and Venturing Crew 2230 of the Rocky Mountain Council, Boy Scouts of America.To become a Koshare, a boy must first be a Scout, which means he must have completed the 5th Grade, or is 11 years old, or has earned the Arrow of Light Award but is less than 18 years old.To become a Chief in the Koshare Indian Dancers, a boy must first become an Eagle Scout.

La Junta Raceway
La Junta Raceway is located at the La Junta Industrial Park and attracts racing enthusiasts from throughout the nation for regional and national races of the Sports Car Club of America.

Vogel Canyon Picnic Area
Vogel Canyon has two permanent springs at the bottom of the canyon and supports a variety of wildlife which can best be seen early morning or just before sunset. Four hiking trails take you the canyon bottom and mesa top. Vogel Canyon is roughly 20-25 minutes from the Midtown.

Timpas Picnic Area
Timpas Creek was the first source of water for travelers on the Sante Fe Trail after leaving the Arkansas River.  A half-mile loop nature trail will take you to Timpas Creek and back.  Hikers and horseback riders can follow a 3.7-mile section of the Sante Fe National Historic Trail to Sierra Vista Overlook. Timpas is roughly 30 minutes from the Midtown Motel.

La Junta Golf Course
La Junta Golf Course is a challenging 9-hole course located at the La Junta Industrial Park. Plans are underway to expand it to a full 18-hole golf course. The course features 3,281 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 35 . The course rating is 35.5 and it has a slope rating of 118 on grass.  It was designed by Army Corp of Engineers and opened in 1940.

La Junta City Park & Sk8Way Skate Park
La Junta City Park is 2 minutes from the Midtown Motel and has plenty of wide open spaces for relaxation or family fun. The  park has lighted tennis courts, basketball courts, a stocked lake for youngsters to fish in, sand volleyball pit, modern playground equipment with a special area for toddlers, several picnic tables, the Sk8way skate park, horse shoe pits and room for a family ball game or a game of Frisbee. There are three large covered gazebos for family gatherings which can be used by the public any day or may be reserved through the city for special events or private parties. The park is open daily from 7 a.m. – 10 p.m.

The Sk8Way Park, located at the south end of La Junta City Park, is a 16,646 square foot Tony Hawk design skateboard park. The Skate Park features an in-ground concrete design with a steel rail around the top for grinds, a snake run, 9 foot bowls, rails, jumps and an awesome street section. It is ranked as one of the top ten skateparks in Colorado by professional skateboarders.  There is plenty of room for BMX bikers, bladers and skateboarders. Sk8Way is open from 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. and admission is free.

La Junta Rifle Club

La Junta Rifle Club is the place to go for any sportsman who wants to hone their sharp-shooting skills.  It offers 3 trap fields, a skeet field, 3 indoor pistol ranges and a 25-300 yard rifle range.
